Michael Beständig Design: a declaration of love The huge variety of mills and shakers stems from the different locations trees grow in, numerous kinds of timber that there are, from selecting the adequate section of the trunk - root, trunk or branch - and a variety of impacts on the timber such as injuries, diseases, characteristic peculiarities and storage. The spectrum of the timber characteristics ranges from simple to conspicuous, and it shows a multitude of shades. These characteristics are responsible for the unique and distinctive expression of each individual mill. For all of these points it is clear that there can only be an utmostly restricted number of mills and shakers that are made of one and the same section of wood. The objects are not only the materialisation of classic aesthetics of material and shape but also the expression of technically and optically optimised details. Holding a mill or a shaker in one's hand feels warm and gentle; as being an organic material, the timber allows pepper and salt to breathe. |
